A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid speed, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in total adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
